Advantages of
Social Networking Sites
Social networking sites present a number of advantages for small
businesses. For one, they are typically free to join and easy to
use, whereas creating and maintaining a detailed and useful
website might be cost prohibitive for some small businesses.
Creating a profile for your business on one of several social
networking sites requires very little effort and no monetary
expense in most cases. Moreover, social networking sites have
proven themselves practical and effective forms of advertising.
Social networking sites allow businesses to connect with both
customers and other associated businesses. By linking to other
businesses in the same or related fields, small businesses have
the opportunity to form mutually beneficial alliances and cross
promote.
For example, several small businesses from the same neighborhood
can create an association by linking social networking profiles.
Residents of that neighborhood can also link their personal
profiles, giving the businesses access to a pool of customers.
Those businesses can then use their profiles as targeted
advertisements. Offline advertisements are less focused than
those that take advantage of social networking sites online.
The Internet never closes, so advertising through social
networking sites has the potential to reach many more customers
than using traditional forms of advertising. If you run an ad on
the radio, it will only run as many times as you pay for it, but
your profile can be viewed an infinite amount of times online.
Small businesses can also advertise on some social networking
sites using traditional forms of Internet marketing such as pay
per click, though not all social networking sites offer this
form of advertising.
The biggest advantage of using social networking sites to
promote your business is your ability to build a network of
loyal clientele. Being a “friend” of your customers allows you
to mine their friend lists for more customers. Similarly, being
included in multiple people’s friend list gives you added
credibility and serves as a ringing endorsement. Moreover, your
profile allows you to keep your customers up to date on events,
specials and other useful information. Social networking sites
take “word of mouth” online, and small businesses have much to
gain. |
